Macomere Fifi will take home a cash prize of over $5,334.00, a 50” LED Colour TV and will travel to London, U.K for the 2013 Notting Hill Carnival, as part of an exchange programme with the Association of British Calypsonians (ABC). Britain’s 2011 Calypso Monarch Alexander D Great performed as a Special Guest on the Kaiso 365.

OCPA 2009 Calypso Monarch Finalists

The finalists for the 2009 Calypson Monarch have been announced. Eight competitors will take on defending champion Macomere Fifi for the esteemed title.

Here are the finalists in Order of Appearance:

OCPA's KAISO 365 Calypso Monarch Finals with take place on Saturday July 18th, 2009 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (Exhibition Place, CNE Grounds). Tickets are $42.00 in advance; $45.00 at the door. The nine finalists will perform two newly-composed calypsos before a panel of judges. Each song will be awarded points out of a maximum of 100 points divided into five (5) categories as follows:

Lyrics - 35
Melody - 20
Vocal Rendition - 25
Presentation - 10
Originality - 10

Cash prizes and gifts are awarded to the four (4) singers with the highest score out of a total of 200 points.

In addition, there will be the following special awards categories: Arrangement, Local Content, Humor, Background Vocals, and New Artiste.

2009 Calypso Tents Music Series

KAISO KAISO!!!
The 2009 ScotiaBank Caribana Festival is just around the corner. One of the first major events in North America’s biggest Caribbean festival is the Calypso Tents Music Series, produced by the Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes (OCPA). This much-anticipated music series features most of Toronto's top calypso singers performing all original works to capture the mood of the festival.

The 2009 Calypso Tents Music Series features two calypso “tents” that run every weekend from June 6th to July 5th (see details below). The Professionals and the KAISO FORUM “tents” are currently auditioning calypso singers for the series. Persons interested should call the OCPA Hotline (416) 795-2722. The series welcomes interest from new and younger artists.

Calypso is a popular music of the Eastern Caribbean and its infectious rhythms, its humorous lyrics and political / social commentaries have found loyal audiences in Toronto and in other major Canadian cities. The Calypso Tents Music Series has consistently featured the most recent songs of artists from Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana, Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, Jamaica, Aruba and Canadian-born singers.
