A week after being airlifted into Antigua for treatment Mount St John’s Medical Centre, internationally acclaimed soca artiste Alphonsus “Arrow” Cassell has died.
The 55-year-old passed away this morning at his home in Montserrat, to which he returned early Monday.
He had been treated at MSJMC for pneumonia by local doctors Prince Ramsey and Ian Thomas.
His brother, Justin “Mighty Hero” Cassell, who said his younger sibling had been ill for some time, had been holding out hope that he would recover. In an on-air interview today, he thanked people across the region and the world for keeping the faith during the artiste’s illness, and for their messages of condolence since word of Arrow’s death spread.
Arrow was diagnosed with a brain tumour early last year and was treated in Miami and Montserrat.
He won Montserat’s calypso monarch competition on four occasions before focusing exclusively on his recording and touring career. He shot to international fame with his 1982 smash hit “Hot, Hot, Hot”. Among his other hits were “Long Time” and “Groove Master”
