Britain’s 2011 Calypso Monarch Alexander D Great performed as a Special Guest on the Kaiso 365.

Families are invited to jump up and join in the carnival experience on Sunday July 29th. Mask making, storytelling, steel drums and the pulsating rhythms of the islands will have you parading through the museum. STORYTELLING 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM Storyteller Sandra Whiting has been telling stories from the time she could talk. Her stories draw upon the rich oral traditions of West African mythologies, folklore, and traditional tales from the Caribbean. With the lyrical lilt of her Jamaican accent, her storytelling has been known to make both children and adults laugh, cry and think. MUSIC The Toronto North Stars Children Steel Orchestra Let the music of the islands get you to jump up out of your seats. Sway and dance to the steel pan sound and then learn how to play in a facsinating demonstration after the first performance. If you are lucky you may be picked to try it out yourself! Performance: 11:30 AM Workshop/Demo: 12:00 PM Performance: 1:00 PM CRAFTS 11 AM to 4 PM Make you own mask, headress and costume elements. Everything you need to prepare to parade in carnival. PARADE 2:30 PM Join the King and Queen from the Children's Carnival in a parade around the museum. Put on your costume and dance in celebration of the 2012 Toronto Caribbean Carnival. WHEREAS the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto is an expression of Caribbean culture and reflects our city's multiculturalism and the diversity among people of Caribbean origin.
Now in its 45th year, this vibrant festival was created as the Caribbean community's contribution to Canada's centennial celebration and has grown to become an important cultural symbol of our city.
The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto is the largest cultural festival in North America, attracting millions of visitors to the city each year for several weeks of events and celebrations. The festival's highlight is the highly anticipated parade where the streets come alive with colourful costumes, bands and live calypso, soca, reggae, hip hop and samba music as well as arts, crafts, fashion and food.
The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto contributes to the economic viability of Toronto and promotes harmony by showcasing the captivating spirit of the Caribbean culture and traditions.

What:        Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival 2012 is kicking off the 3-week summer festival at Nathan Phillips Square. The NOON HOUR launch showcases the many events that will entertain and energize Toronto.  Speeches.  Musical performances.  Dance troupes and over 80 men and women in this year's colourful Mas costumes. Calypso singers.  Soca music. Pan orchestra.

Why:         Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival is an important tourism event.  It annually brings hundreds of thousands of tourists into the city.  New events.  Children's Parade is moving to Downsview  Park.  Fish Fry and  J’Ouvert at the CNE.  Major Caribbean performers to appear at the Carnival Lime at the Docks Entertainment Complex

The hotly contested ‘Kaiso 365’ puts the festival spotlight on nine of Toronto’s top calypso singers, along with special guest Alexander D’ Great, winner of the Association of British Calypsonians (ABC) 2011 U.K. Calypso Monarch Competition.

Musical Director Ossie Gurley returns this year to lead a 9-piece band to give singers their chance to show off their latest work.

Nine finalists will sing two songs each in their quest for Canada’s top Calypso prize, capping off weeks of performances in the Calypso Tents Music Series. Last year’s winner Structure will defend his crown and the coveted People’s Choice award.

Songs are judged on their Lyrics, Melody, Vocal Rendition, Presentation and Originality. Special awards categories for Arrangement, Local Content, Humour, Background Vocals,

and Best New Artist.

NEW EVENT: OPENING & CLOSING CHURCH SERVICES TO OFFER PRAISE AND WORSHIP AS PART OF 2012 FESTIVAL

July 7, 2012 (Toronto) – Among several new additions to this year’s Festival events will be two church services. The Festival Management Committee welcomes the public to attend both an Opening Church service on Sunday July 15th and a Closing Thanksgiving Service on Sunday August 12th to share in praise and worship during the Toronto Caribbean Carnival season.  

The Opening Church service will take place Sunday July 15th, 2012 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Revival Time Tabernacle located at 4340 Dufferin Street, North York, ON [between Sheppard Ave. and Finch Ave.] led by Reverend Aubrey James.  There will be a reception immediately following the service from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  All are welcome.

The Closing Thanksgiving service will take place Sunday August 12th, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. at the St. James Cathedral located at 65 Church Street, Toronto, ON led by The Right Reverend Dean Douglas Stoute.

Media Launch to announce MAJOR changes to the 2012 FREE Junior Carnival Parade

July 3, 2012  (Toronto) The media is invited to join Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto’s CEO Denise Herrera Jackson, local MPPs, city of Toronto councillors, and members of the Caribbean Canadian community for the releasing of information about this year’s Junior Carnival.  For the first time in a decade the parade will not be held along Jane Street, it will instead be held in Downsview Park on July 21st.


The Festival Management Committee, members of the Toronto Mas Band Association and The Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes, will be releasing key information about this year’s Children’s Parade and Carnival.  As well children from several mas camps will be showing their new costumes for the first time!  There will also be Junior Calypso singers, a dance group and steelpan performances.


Why: There has been a major venue change and programme additions to this year’s Children’s Carnival.  Because of traffic safety concerns and because of space limitations, this growing event has had to find a new home! Over 2,000 children  in mas costumes are expected to take part in the parade, making it the largest children s carnival parade in North America. A Family Day Event follows the Parade until 8pm.

May 22, 2012  (Toronto) – The media is invited to join Minister Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, at the official media launch for this year’s Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival.  The Minister will be joined at the podium with new corporate and media sponsors, and festival executives at the Royal Ontario Museum.

What: The Festival Management Committee, members of the Toronto Mas Band Association andThe Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes, will be releasing key information about this year’s Caribbean Carnival.

Why: There have been major venue changes and programme additions to this year’s three week carnival. As well, there are new corporate sponsors and a new Caribbean media sponsor supporting the Carnival this year.

Who: Spokespeople from key stakeholders including the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Festival Management Committee, new corporate sponsors and media partners. There will be mas players in costume and live music.
